For John Robert Stevens, faith was the absolute belief in the truth and power of God and His Word. He lived contending for the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 3) and taught others to contend likewise. Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing the Word of God, and John stood on this, teaching that all faith is based on what God has said. However, Stevens took this a step further, and declared that faith is not just a mental exercise, but is an action.
The fact is that faith is an activity; we must get away from the idea that faith is merely the acceptance of a truth…. Be a doer. Take actions that correspond to your faith.1
Stevens used the example of someone coming into a room and yelling “Fire!” If anyone truly believed that there was a fire, that person would take action on that belief and run out of the building. In the same way, if we believe what God has told us, there will naturally be a corresponding response. One of the responses that Stevens advocated was prophecy, which is simply the act of speaking the Word of God in a creative way.
Your faith is like a fuse that is attached to the greatest source of energy there is. His Word is in your heart, your faith is the fuse, and your mouth is the fire. Light the fuse! Explode His Word into action.2
Stevens believed that the opposite of faith was fear and doubt. He went so far as to say that fear and doubt are not indicative of a lack of belief, but are actually the fruit of a belief in the opposite of the Word of God.
