In The First Principles, Stevens wrote: “The Bible is the inspired Word of God.” (II Peter 1:19–21; II Timothy 3:16–17) Stevens not only believed that the Bible was inspired, but that it should inspire the reader. He had a passionate love for the Book and its teachings.
Stevens taught that every believer should read and study the Scriptures (II Timothy 2:15, KJV). He taught that the neglect of the Word was destructive to your spiritual life (Hosea 4:6; Proverbs 29:18). He taught that it is only by the Word that we attain any true success in life (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1). Stevens felt that the Bible should be read faithfully, systematically, and prayerfully.
He believed that the Bible should not only be cherished, but also made an integral part of the believer’s life. “If we look upon the Bible as something remote from us, we have missed the revelation of the Bible.”1 The purpose of the Bible is to bring the Church to the place where we let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly (Colossians 3:16).
